Is Your Network Working Its Best?

Everyone has a network of some kind at home or in their business. You may have a mixture of wired and wireless technologies that help keep your devices connected to each other and the internet. In this post we will go over how to see if your network is performing at its best and if there are areas it can improve.

Your Internet Router

The router brings in internet and usually helps share that connection with all your home devices. Knowing how fast your internet speed is is important because the home network should be much faster than this to ensure everyone can use that same speed. If your router is older and you have newer devices or want to upgrade the speed of your internet, a new router may be necessary. Where some people have issues with the router given to them from their Internet Service Provider is that it is an all-in-one setup. It is their gateway to the internet and also the only device broadcasting the Wi-Fi network to the whole house. This may not reach the whole house or property where you would want the internet to be available. Sometimes people use wireless extenders to push their signal further but that is not the optimal way to have your home network.

Mesh Networks and Wireless Extenders

If you are considering using a wireless extender, you probably should be using a mesh network instead. Wireless extenders make a new and different network and link off the original network for internet. Having more Wi-Fi networks in the same small area can result in congestion and lower speeds due to the channels being over used. A mesh network will create one wifi network and talk to each other to hand off information intelligently to create a faster and larger network. These can be a little more expensive but not having to hop between networks in your own home and being able to control everything from one location is much better. These are also modular and while you can buy a 2 or 3 pack of the mesh routers, if you bought more you could extend the network even further.

Wired Networks

People still use wired connections to link their computers and devices. The two main problems people have with wired networks is bad cables and too long of cables. When people get cabling done and someone does not know what they are doing, the cable could be terminated incorrectly and this will lead to reliability and speed issues. The same is true when they make the cables too long. An Ethernet cable can only be 295ft (90m) before it is too long due to attenuation. You terminate them into a switch and get another long cable from there but there has to be something to re-transmit at the end of the 90m.

Conclusion

With more and more devices requiring to be connected to some sort of network it can turn into a hassle to create the required network and make it be what you want it to be. We at Accel Tech Services do offer free on site consultation for creating or upgrading networks. We will listen to what you want to have in your network and advice and implement exactly what you need. If you would like to have us come audit you location or network just schedule an appointment!
