Should You Be Using Windows 10 or 11?

Is Windows 11 Worth It?

Windows 11 is the newest version that will have longer support than Windows 10. Windows 10 will be supported until October 14, 2025. This means that you will no longer get Windows updates that fixes security and stability issues with your operating system. This means if you do not upgrade your computer is effectively retired as of that date. Windows 11 is a free upgrade if you already have Windows 10. The interface is a little different and in my personal experience it is more organized. The settings menu is much better. Options are laid out intuitively and has better context. The Taskbar is centered, which leads to less mouse travel. All in all, it is worth the upgrade.

What Sort of CPU Do You Have?

The easiest way to determine if you should be using Windows 10 or 11 is what CPU you have. Windows 11 only supports Intel Core processors that are 8th generation or newer and AMD Zen processors that are 2nd generation or newer. There are other factors such as having a motherboard that supports secure boot and has TPM on it, but if you motherboard has one of the supported CPUs it probably already has the other requirements.

How Do I See What CPU I Have?

  1. Click on your search icon on your taskbar.

  2. Type in Device Manager.

  3. Click on the arrow to the left of Processors.

  4. Where it says the name of the processor you have there will be a 4 to 5 digit model number. Ignore the last 3 numbers and focus on the first one or two digits. That is the generation number. If your CPU is Intel, that needs to be an 8 or higher. If you have an AMD, it needs to be 2 or higher.

I Have a Supported CPU, How Do I Upgrade?

  1. The easiest way is to get the Windows 11 Installation Assistant found at this link: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

  2. Follow the steps and it will begin to download and install Windows 11. You can choose to keep your files and settings.

  3. This may take a little time but well worth it at the end knowing your PC will be supported beyond when they discontinue Windows 10.
